Living in a cross culture is a good change for you to experience variety things. On the other hand, it brought some difficulties also, such as how to familiar with the new environment, relinquishing your own culture or assume another culture. After reading the article “The struggle to be an All American girl” written by Elizabeth Wong, who had a struggle to be American girl, but it’s not only a struggle to change her mother’s thinking, it is also the struggle to free herself.
In the beginning of “The struggle to be an All American girl”, Elizabeth Wong started out with describing Chinese school in her living town and wrote about her and her brother’s experience of changing their culture from Chinese to American since they were children. They went to the Chinese school because her mother expectation even though they hated it. At the school, they learned not only Chinese but politeness as well. The school in her memory smelled like “mothballs or dirty closet”, the lecture was look like a “maniacal child killer”. When she became ten years old, Wong “had better things to learn”, she started to study American culture, learn science subjects and read American literature. Her regard that was better than Chinese culture. She considered Chinese was “source of embarrassment”, that sounds “pedestrian”, “chaotic” and “frenzied” and that’s the reason she tried to separate herself from the family members when she “nearby American super marker outside the Chinatown”. After two years in Chinese school, the author and her brother were “allowed not to going there”. Wong thought herself as a “multicultural” person but in her inner deep thought, she still was a Chinese not yet an American.
The main idea of “The struggle to be an All American Girl” is the way how Wong changed her culture, and how she fought for her decision, she fought to free herself. By many various...
