Introduction


You are writing a book review. The key thing to keep in mind is the difference between a book review and a book report. A book report is an assignment that may be given to a younger student. It typically involves a summary of the story that is perhaps supplemented by a discussion of a literary element or two. While these things may be included in a book review, it will also include a bit of reaction and opinion from the writer (i.e. you). The guidelines section below will give you more specific information about what to include in your writing.

This is a Writing/Essay assignment. It is worth 50 points in your Writing/Essay category.
It is due Thursday, September 19th.


Guidelines


Here is a specific breakdown of what is expected from you for this assignment:


The review should follow the standard MLA format. If you need a refresher on this, check out the http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/.
The review should reach one full page. Failure to reach a full page will result in an automatic 15-point deduction.
The review should include the following parts:
The author and title should be mentioned early in the review, preferably in the first paragraph.
Your overall opinion of the novel should be established early in the review, preferably in the first paragraph.
You should include a summary of the story. You need to be careful not to get too detailed in your summary. This should take between 5-7 sentences to complete. ("Go Ask Alice is a story about a young girl in the 70’s who..."). Write your review for someone who has not yet read the story. Your reader wants a general idea about the story, NOT the entire story.
You should include an in-depth explanation of your opinion of the story. This should also take between 5-7 sentences to discuss. Your first sentence should establish your overall opinion. The rest of the paragraph should include specific reasons...
