Brittany Songy Mrs. Louis 26 September 2008 Nonverbal Observations Report We surround ourselves with several objects that send plenty of specific nonverbal messages. Whether we realize it or not, every artifact we own expresses a different aspect of our personality. For this project, I examined my car, bedroom, and personal style in order to recognize these messages. I also observed a male friend’s truck, bedroom, and personal style in order to compare and contrast the nonverbal codes being sent. Everything I observed told something small but significant to each of our personas. Proximics is the way we communicate through space and territory. This can include the way we decorate our home, arranging certain objects, or how much is space provided in a conversation. I focused on specific artifacts. In my vehicle, I found pictures of family in the sun visor, school books on the backseat, Mardi Gras beads hanging from my rear view mirror, a Fleur Di Lee sticker on the window, and a variety of CD’s to listen to while driving. Judging from the pictures, I would probably be perceived as a family oriented person. The books are proof I am going to school. The beads and sticker are a representation of pride of New Orleans, where I was born and raised. The CD’s demonstrate my love for different kinds of music. These are all nonverbal messages being conveyed just from a few objects found inside my car. My friend drives a truck which immediately certifies his masculinity. The inside is rather chaotic, with empty drink cans and fast food bags on the floor. He also has cigarette burns on his seats. All in all, I came to the conclusion he might not be as hygienic as one should! Proximics can be intentional or unintentional ways to express a personality. Physical appearance is another aspect of nonverbal language. Physical appearance includes clothing, tattoos, piercings, and hairstyles. I enjoy wearing grays and blacks.
