According to http://www.dictionary.com, Intolerance can be denied as this, “the unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect contrary opinions or beliefs.” From the beginning of the play in A Doll’s House we are thrown into a world with intolerance already predisposed on the women in the society. Mrs. Linde and Nora are two women who may not complain about their situation at first but once they realize what is going on they are quick to change their minds about where they stand in their lives. They both live in a society that doesn’t give them much leeway with what they can do but slowly and surely they both find their voices and reach to attain all they want to attain within their lives.
In the very beginning of the play we witness a dialogue between Torvald and Nora. Throughout the entire conversation Torvald does not really listen to anything Nora says. Torvald almost makes Nora feel like an idiot when he says things like this: "Nora, Nora! Just like a woman! But seriously, Nora, you know what I think about that sort of thing. No debts, no borrowing. There's something constrained, something ugly even, about a home that's founded on borrowing and debt." If Nora knew how her husband talks down to her she might realize that she was unhappy and left the marriage even before the letter and her crime were exposed. The way Torvald treats her and the way society views her is a large intolerance that Nora has to face. Despite the limitations society has already given her Nora is able to over come them and escape from her overbearing husband. In a way, I feel more intolerance could have been avoided if she could have realized the restraints that where placed on her from the start.
Along with Nora, Mrs. Linde suffers from the same legalities that hold her back as woman within this Norwegian society. When Mrs. Linde was younger she was in love with Nils Krogstad. Sadly Mrs. Linde took it upon herself to take care of her family members who had no one else. At the...
