Sample OUTLINE for Persuasive Speech

Speech Title: Should we have school uniforms?
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that we should have school uniforms.
A. Have you ever been picked on for something you’re wearing? Have you ever felt threatened? Neither of these are feelings we’d wish on anyone, but unfortunately, both have happened in a school, and could be happening right now.
B. I want to tell you today about something that I believe will make schools safer, help improve the learning environment, and help students get along.
II. Need Step
A. We have a big problem in schools across the country - bullying.
1. Why? Students are picked on based on looks, hobbies, or because they stand out in some way. It’s often because of what they wear.
a. This problem is widespread. Most people can recount at least one story from their childhood in which they felt out of place, under-dressed, or uncool because of how they looked.
b. Sometimes this is because the students receive hand-me downs from siblings, or the students come from a poorer family and can’t afford the new name brand clothes.
c. Jodee Blanco is now a successful, published author of a book called Please Stop Picking on Me. Her memoir details painful years of being bullied, and the effect it had on hers and others she knows.
2. How big of a problem is this?
a. “Clemson University study released in October of 2010: In the largest survey of its kind to look at the issue, researchers surveyed 524,054 students at 1,593 schools across the nation over the last two years to get a better picture of bullying in grades three through 12.”
b. “They found that 17 percent of kids reported on anonymous questionnaires that they are being bullied two to three times a month or more. Of those bullied, nearly 40 percent of the girls and 45 percent of boys say it's been going on in some form — verbally, physically or online — for more than a...
