Using the Lab Manual, complete Labs 10.1 through 10.4. Create a Word documents in which you answer the review questions at the end of each lab and post that to this assignment. To complete these labs you will need a computer with Windows XP. *Lab 10.1 – *Protect Your Computer from Viruses and Adware 1. List some ways your computer might become infected with a virus:
Computers can become infected with Malware from websites, e-mail attachments, and downloaded shareware or freeware programs. You could also use an infected floppy disk or zip drive and transfer a virus to your computer. A virus could also spread from one computer to another via a LAN.
*2. Why is it important to allow your antivirus program to update its virus definition files automatically?*
Since new viruses are being written all the time, it is important that your AV software is current and up to date with the latest virus information. If you do not have our AV software set up to automatically update its virus definition files, you could forget to do it manually and then would subject your computer system to new viruses.
*3. Why do some companies bundle adware with their programs?*
These companies are trying to gain money by using pop-up ads in your browser and getting you to buy products or services.
4. Why does scanning your hard drive for viruses take so long?
When your AV software scans your hard drive, it is checking every file on the hard drive against every known virus definition. You could easily have hundreds of thousands of files of your hard drive and thousands of virus definition files. (PC World magazine estimates that the number of known viruses will reach the 1 million mark sometime this year!)
*5. What can you do if you aren't running antivirus software and suspect your computer is infected?*
There are many web sites that offer free AV scans of your system. Also some Internet Providers provide free AV software to their subscribers (Comcast for example)....
