Lack of Informatics training in the nursing curriculum is a problem; many student nurses go out to clinical and lack the knowledge to navigate in the hospital Cerner Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to access their patients’ medical records. This is extremely frustrating for the students, faculty, and clinical sites.
The project objective would be to analyze, develop, implement, and evaluate an educational program about principles of EMR training program for Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students to function in clinical and simulation setting.
In the literature review there is a project called “The Passport Project” (Edwards & O’Conner, 2011) where it assess the skills, knowledge of informatics, while doing computer training to undergraduate nursing student in a program in Central Illinois. The solution would be to implement electronic documentation education program for our laboratory by using our academic clinical partnership and using Elsevier Cerner SimChart system. To implement this project the College of Nursing will need to purchase the Cerner SimChart system and have it installed in the simulation lab computers and the college computer testing classrooms for training of faculty and students.
I am also proposing to integrate Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to our curriculum would be to have the support of faculty so that we can incorporate informatics competencies and requirements into the school of nursing. This solution will help meet the AACN and the NLN accreditation and informatics guidelines.
Faculty commitment is necessary in order for the SimChart to be successfully implemented. SimChart vendor support to provide around the clock technical support. I identify faculty members with basic computer skill to support the project.
The College of Nursing already has a simulation lab with computer set up in each simulation room. Technical support will be needed to maintain and support the simulation lab
The college also has computer...
