The United States of America are confronted with one of many great decisions. The time has come for another presidential election, and this year US Americans have to choose between the Democratic Senator of Illinois, Barack Obama, and the Republican Senator of Arizona, John McCain. As always, money is spent to promote each candidates ideas and to make the other candidate look worse than the other one, but it seems that this year there is something bigger behind all that. The US is falling into bigger and bigger economic crisis every day and the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan desperately need a proper ending. Who will promise more? Who will look better on the screen? Who will seem more trustworthy?
Both Obama and McCain have very different opinions on how to create peace in Iraq and the surrounding countries in the Middle East. Obama argues that “We should seize this moment to begin the phased redeployment of combat troops that I have long advocated, and that is needed for long-term success in Iraq and the security interests of the United States” (The New York Times). On the other hand, McCain “believes it is strategically and morally essential for the United States to support the Government of Iraq to become capable of governing itself and safeguarding its people. He strongly disagrees with those who advocate withdrawing American troops before that has occurred.” (McCain’s webpage). The reasons for the Iraq war are obvious: the 9/11 attack is the major issue, along with the doubt that the Iraqis are hiding a weapon of mass destruction somewhere in their country. President Bush thought that by getting involved into a war and tracking down and killing the suspects held responsible for the 9/11 attack, all the American fears of another terrorist attack will go away. But the suspects haven’t been caught and the US is still living in fear of terrorist attacks. The only reasonable thing to do now, so it seems, is to withdraw the American troops from Iraq and...
