Observations of Chemical Changes

Experiment 001

OBJECTIVE:

This experiment is to observe and study any chemical changes with household cleaners.

To study and document the reaction between bleach and known chemicals.

HYPOTHSIS

My prediction is that the bleach may show some physical reaction to some of the testing chemicals but not all.

I also predict that the solutions will be better viewed over white paper than dark.

Procedure:

Lab area was set up within a safe designated area for work.

Testing wells were prepped as well as all other materials that would be used in this experiment.

Tested the reaction of each specific chemical/compound with Clorox Bleach.

Closely monitored and recorded data for each reaction.

Created Data Table using the recorded information from each test.

Data Table 1: Reactions
Well #/ Question

Chemicals

Reaction
A
NaHCO3 and HCI - C02
No Physical reaction when Bleach was added. Over white paper I could see somewhat of a difference in chemicals but not over the dark paper.

B

HCI and BTB
When HCI & BTB were added together the solution turned a bright yellow. Once the bleach was added the solution turned back to clear. Once again over white paper I could see somewhat of a difference in chemicals but not over the dark paper.
C
NH3 and BTB
When NH3 and BTB were added together the solution turned a dark blue. Once bleach was added the color turned to a light blue. The chemical reaction from the bleach seems to fade the BTB.
D
HCI and blue dye
When HCI & Blue Dye were added together they created a great teal color along with tiny bubbles in the center of the well. Once Bleach was added the teal color moved to only the ring of the well leaving the center clear. Seems as a sort of separation of the compound....
