Obesity and Type II Diabetes
Today, there are many diseases which or society has to deal with such as Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes as well as many other conditions. Obesity is the leading cause of all of these diseases. The most common disease which is a direct out come from Obesity is Type II Diabetes, which in itself is a very serious disease. Obesity, if controlled, can become a nonexistent part of our lives. Obesity is a disease which was, for the most part, brought upon by our “bigger is better” society. Now, we are reaping the repercussions of this horrible disease called Obesity.
From 1997 to 2003, there was a 41% increase in the incidence of diagnosed diabetes. In 2003, two out of every 1000 normal-weight people had diabetes. In the same year, diabetes struck 18.3 out of every 1000 obese people, and 5.5 out of every 1000 overweight people. (DeNoon, 2006) These statistics alone are enough for concern. There is clearly enough proof that people whom are overweight and obese stand a greater chance of getting Type II Diabetes. Type II Diabetes is a very serious disease. The most common form of diabetes is type 2 Diabetes (once known as noninsulin-dependent Diabetes mellitus or NIDDM). About 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2 Diabetes. This form of diabetes usually develops in adults over the age of 40 and is most common among adults over age 55. About 80 percent of people with type 2 Diabetes are overweight. (Center, 2008) If diabetes is not controlled, it can lead to many, very serious complications. Obesity, is also a very serious disease, and sometimes is over looked my many people. Obesity and the many diseases it can lead up to are becoming more and more troubling to our nation. However, more is being done to help control this problem.
