Obesity is to have a body mass index of 30. With the BMI over 40 would then be considered morbidly obese. With 15% of children being considered obese in 2000, the statics proved this problem is only increasing. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are caused by the intake of to many carbohydrates, which can also lead to heart disease. During our ancient history fresh vegetables, berries, and seeds was the food source, while today starchy vegtables and fast foods are served for dinner. It is no wonder in 2001 that 58.4% of adulta in America are considered overweight and 21.7% are obese. (“Obesity” Encyclopedia) Many people view obesity as an illness while others see it as an individual’s choice. Obesity can be explained as a serious illness that can also cause emotional, mental and physical distress.
Precious, a film based on a poor, unintelligent, obese woman who is sexually, mentally, and physically abused by both her mother and her father. It is not always the individual to blame for their obesity. Precious was force-fed by her mother at a young age even if she was not hungry. In a scene she is forced to eat her whole dish of pigs feet and Marconi n cheese. Parents who neglect, abuse, or are unfit to raise children are also a major cause to this epidemic. Although she was a binge eater throughout the film, it very well could be due to improper parenting styles. (“The Debate Over”)(“Brow Beat”).




However there are solutions for Americans who are experiencing weight complications, the main one is simply diet. With the obstacles of fast foods, depression, abuse and unproductivity it is almost impossible to prevent unless the individual is willing to better their health and completely change their bad eating habits.
