Growing up, I’ve had to face many obstacles many of which were not always good. I’ve had my share of happy, sad, and depressing moments. When I was a little girl my mother and father parted, my siblings were confused and wanted to have someone to blame. Since our father was no longer a part of the family the only person left to turn to was our mother. I felt that I was the only one who understood her mentally and emotionally. I knew that all the random bruises that appeared on her body that she said she had gotten at work were from our father. He was an abusive drunk, and even I was old enough to understand that. For that exact reason I did not blame her, and knew it wasn’t her fault. Being the only child who stood by her, I caught myself getting stuck in between arguments. After the stage of pointing fingers I thought things would get a little easier, but the truth was that from that day forward things just got much harder. My mother was left to raise three kids on her own receiving minimum wage as a cashier. She knew her job wasn’t going to take her far, but since she wasn’t a high school graduate she had no other place to turn to. We then had to find as many ways as possible of saving money. Our mother then chooses to move our family into a mobile home. Even then, her wages did not make the cuts. I hated seeing my mom sit in the kitchen table with the biggest glossy eyes I’ve ever seen, holding in the tears because she didn’t want us to know about our financial problems and stress over them. At that point, I then realized how hard life would be without graduating from high school or going to college. Quickly this woman taught me to transform my paralyzing fears into a determined drive for success. As my sophomore year was coming to an end, I knew I had to work hard from there on out. I walked around campus with my eyes and ears wide open listening and watching for any available opportunities. By the end of the year I managed to bring my grades up and...
