The solution for adolescents to have a prolific online experience is to keep a close eye on the sites they are visiting while they are online. Whether it’s done with or without them knowing, it is a must that it happens. There are also ways of filtering what they cannot see while online through your home computers. As a parent, it is necessary to explain the rules for working online and building online friendships with others. Letting them know there is certain information that should not be given out online without permission can keep them safe. Although harm can happen at any given time, the best way to protect our children is to be aware of the dangers in any situation. Quantities believe that online communication is not good for adolescents, because it encourages them to form relationships that are not deep, non-committal, and pathetic (Slife, 2012).
An adolescent’s development should consist of social skills with their peers. We live in a technologically advanced era where smart phones are like mobile computers that can be taken just about anywhere and children are more likely to have cell phones and accessibility to computers. This means there is more outside communication with the world around them as well as their peers. Technology has created more avenues for communicating and being social without being face-to-face. Adolescents are still developing social skills but now they are learning how to use a keyboard while doing so. This is the course of communication is going in and it will only continue to advance beyond what we know now. The reality is that each generation in this technology era will have different means of developing socially but it is vital that some of the common social skills are taught early on.
