Online games are computer games played on the computer in cybercafés either alone or in competition with other gamers. I say that online games are doing youths more good than harm.

Games keep them away from getting involved in unhealthy activities like drugs or criminal activities. Many prefer to play games at cybercafés for entertainment because of the cheap hourly rates. It is a good way to bond with friends and meet new people who share the same interest.

Gamers also think that there is nothing wrong with making a business out of trading virtual items or high-level avatars in games. It is possible to earn several thousand ringgit a month by trading virtual items or helping other gamers improve their avatars. Virtual items have value because of the time and effort it takes to obtain them. Some students do this part time to help pay college fees. It also provides job opportunities especially for those who have not completed schooling. They play online games on a competitive basis and are able to earn a decent living doing something they like. This is not illegal as cybercafés operate on licensed premises.

Through online games kids are learning how to earn money by pursuing their interest. This may not seem proper when they are still in school. But, indirectly they are learning entrepreneurial skills. Parents can feel proud of them as long as their studies are not affected. It is better than having them waste money loitering in shopping malls.

Cybercafes are also comparatively healthier than other places of entertainment. These places, unlike discos or bars are free of drugs or alcohol and most do not even allow smoking nowadays.

One disadvantage is truancy among school children. Some of them sneak out of school and go to cybercafés. Actually, children will play truant regardless of whether there are online games or cybercafés. Most cybercafés have strict rules that forbid anyone wearing school uniform from entering the premises.
