Summary of the article including citations
In the article Generation Matters it talks about the different characteristics and skills that each of the generations, traditionalists, baby boomers, generation X, and generation Y, have and their preferences for communication. Traditionalists were born in the years 1927-1945, people from this generation tend to prefer face-to-face communication or written memos and “they value hard work and thrift, are loyal employees and many have worked for a single firm over their entire career” (p. 52) (Generation Matters, 2015). Baby Boomers were born in the years 1946-1964, people from this generation tend to communicate through meetings, emails, and over the phone. Baby boomers “tend to live for their jobs and will jump in whenever and wherever needed” (p. 52) (Generation Matters, 2015), this is due to their dedication to their job and wanting to be involved. Generation X were born in the years 1965-1980, many from this generation communicate in an immediate and direct manner and prefer to communicate through emails, texts, or on their cellphones. People from generation X “are ambitious and hard working but mostly as individuals or entrepreneurs” (p. 52) (Generation Matters, 2015), this may be due to their need to be independent. Generation Y was born in the years 1980-early 2000s, people in this generation prefer to communicate through texts, tweets, Facebook, FaceTime, and Instagram. With this generation having confident personalities many “see work as an entitlement, rather than the other way around, and are constantly evaluating whether their current employment provides what they want”...
