Week 5 Case Assignment
1. He broke down the barrier by integrating employees from different departments to work together and develop new ideas and products. He also included executives from other companies that are leading the industry in innovation. They had brainstorming sessions to identify the needs of their customers and ways to accommodate those needs. They created 4 characters, Catherine, Anna, Monica and Maria that represented different types of consumers. He did this to breakdown departmental barriers, reduce cost, increase sales, and create a cross-functional team.
2. Two advantages would be the decrease in time it takes to develop and create a product and the amount of money saved in utilizing a groupthink approach. All input was considered during the brainstorming sessions so they were able to avoid technical issues that may have normally arisen on the factory floor. He’s also developing his employees more and utilizing their individual skills and knowledge to attain the companies business objectives.
3. The main component of an organization’s success is teamwork. Teamwork is the key to accomplishing company objectives, building trust, and creating a workplace that promotes individuality and focuses on results. In Electrolux’s case, it appears the major success of reverting to a teamwork atmosphere was an increase in innovation. Due to the shift in Straberg’s strategy he was able to not only increase annual sales and operating income but also able to increase efficiency, improve performance, and create more innovative products that tended to the needs of his consumers (Catherine, Anna, Monica, and Maria). As long as he keeps teamwork at the forefront, he’ll continue to exceed his competition.
