As leaders we spend a good amount of time in the processes of learning. Whether we are a seasoned veteran or someone new to the leadership role, the learning process is continuous. To make the learning process more effective one should spend some time identifying and exploring their particular learning style. Kolbs model of learning groups learners into four distinctly different styles. According to the definitions of these four styles, I find myself most closely associated with the “Convergers”. One of my greatest strengths is the ability analyze and organize information and then take that information and apply it to a process or situation. Using this ability I can assist my employees with getting their ideas and opportunities for improvementdocumented and then implemented. Whether I am faced with an employee conflict or manufacturing issue my ability to remain calm and think rationally will enable me to solve these problems in an effective and timely manner. Much like the role of learner the role of leader also encompasses a particular style. This leadership style may change depending on the situation and or individuals involved. Leadership style may be also be shaped by ones particular work environment. If I were to describe my current leadership style in a single word it would be participative. In our department we employ knowledgeable and skillful individuals who are very good at what they do. As a leader I am not expected to know everything. There are many occasions where I have part of the information and my employees have the other portion of the information. Thus everyone becomes involved in the decision making process even though I have final authority over the decision being made. It is important that I involve my employees in the decision making processes. This participative approach allows for information to flow freely, builds trust and enforces the concept of teamwork.
