The Boeing Company is the largest manufacturer of military and commercial aircraft in the world. Boeing employs nearly 161,000 workers in the United States and overseas, with major operations near Seattle, Washington, St Louis, Missouri and southern California. In 2006, the company’s total sales exceeded $66.3 billion (Google Finance, 2008).
Boeing designs and manufactures fixed and rotary-wing aircraft (i.e., helicopters), space satellites, launch vehicles, defense systems, strategic and tactical missiles, and advanced information and communication systems. Boeing is a leading U.S. defense contractor and it provides extensive support to the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) for both robotic and human space flight missions. Boeing plays a major role operating the International Space Station and supporting NASA during flights of the U.S. Space Shuttle.
As the world’s leading aerospace company, Boeing relies on technology to support many aspects of its business operations. Organizational plans are used to leverage existing and emerging technology to continue the company’s competitiveness and dominance in the world marketplace. Organizational technology plans are used to assess current technology, analyze competitive strengths, define corporate strategy, guide change management and consider responsibilities to be a good corporate citizen around the world.
