Like adult education, distance education is a field of practice in which the practitioners apply the results of research in such foundation disciplines as learning, communications, policy, organization, management, history, philosophy, curriculum and instruction. The conditions under which distance educators practice, and that students learn, are sufficiently different in degree if not in king from conventional education to deserve special treatment. However, they are also part of the universe of education, and draw on the wellsprings of educational theory and existing educational research traditions, and in turn contribute to the reformation and further development of this mainstream research.
