Being part of a community requires for a person to not only live within its bounds, but also to participate in its activities. I contribute to my community, not only by being a good student, but also by being in various organizations not only in school but also out of it. In doing all this, I have learned the importance of taking time out of our busy schedules to take part in activities. Although these activities might initially be cumbersome and tedious, by the end I find that it is all worth while to see a child smile or to make my community cleaner.
The organization that I have taken part in the most is the French National Honor Society, a school sponsored club. My most meaningful experience through the FNHS was when the club took members to help out at an Easter celebration at the local Boys and Girls Club. We helped to decorate the room where the party was going to be, and once it started, to organize the kids from the Boys and Girls Club in games. We held a watermelon eating contest and the kids were absolutely thrilled. I was struck by how such a simple contest, consisting of four kids eating as much watermelon as possible in 25 seconds, could so easily excite the kids to the point that one boy cried when he lost the competition. I was even more surprised by how little it took for the FNHS to sponsor the celebration, just around forty dollars and some time out of the member’s lives. Sometimes even relatively small parties like the one we held can make such a difference and add something, even if only for a week at the most, to the community. Something else I have done through a school sponsored club was selling cystic fibrosis flyers at a dollar a piece for the National Honor Society. This activity also took nothing more than time from the member’s busy life, and it probably helped a lot of families with children with cystic fibrosis.
Outside of school, I am a member of the Keystone Club, a club sponsored by the local Boys and Girls Club...
