1. When a woman becomes pregnant she is automatically able to receive maternity leave. Fathers however, do not get to take this time. I believe father have the right to be able to care for their newborn. Fathers should be provided paternity leave because they have an obligation to the newborn and it gives them this time to form a bond and also to help the mother as well.
a. Mother's need to able to rest and recover after such a life changing experience. After giving birth a woman's body can be very exhausted and adding a baby to the situation makes her even more exhausted.
i. Having the father there to help with cleaning bottles, changing diapers, and soothing a crying baby helps a mom from draining herself.
ii. It could make her more confident and relaxed having another body in the house.
iii. Many women suffer from post-partum depression and with fathers being home it helps to put a little ease, since babies can be overwhelming.
b. Another is new babies should be able to spend as much time with their father, as much as their mother.
i. It is a great advantage emotionally for father and newborn to create bond this early in life.
ii. Fathers are able to get to know their child and their child’s needs.
iii. It also gives the mother a break just to get some time to herself.
c. Paternity leave for fathers would also give the mother a chance to go back to work.
i. Childcare can be very expensive especially for newborns.
ii. Reversing roles can show fathers the hardship that comes along with raising a newborn and managing to live a healthy life.
iii. Fathers can help in searching for adequate child-care.
2. Some people aren't really convinced that men should get paternity leave, because obviously women are the ones that get pregnant and go through childbirth....
