Peaceful Interaction and Tolerance.
Everyone has his own path in the world. When we walk in the streets we see both the rich and poor, the healthy and the sick. Usually, people want to communicate with the rich and respected them. Nobody it seems wants with the poor or homeless. People think that there is not any use to talking with them. Unfortunately most people look for their own personal advantages in choosing whom to connect to.
When see various people, before we make conclusions we have to understand, and consider their background. When we understand people’s personalities, we can get along with just about anyone. When we know who they are and how they came to be the way they are, we can become sympathetic to their needs. The moment people see that they are being understood, they become more motivated to connect with each other, and barriers disappear.
In his essay “One of Us” Ahmed Erdogan talks about his experience with a homeless man. When Ahmed saw him, in the New York City Subway on a cold winter night, at first he saw him through the prejudice of the rest of society. However, Ahmed observed that the homeless man was old, he had shoes which were worn out and he was wearing dirty clothes. He saw the man tore a piece of paper and rolled thinly as a cigarette. Ahmed knew that he wanted to smoke. Rather than judging him, he chose to respect him. Ahmed also listened to the homeless man’s story. The man explained that his life was complex because of several factors. One factor was the governments treatment of the poor. “The government call us bums”, “nobody likes us”. He explained to Ahmed that many homeless wanted to work but they couldn’t find a job. Ahmed talked with the homeless man and he didn’t even realize when they came to the last stop.
