Personal Narrative Statement for Lisa Juday

1) How do you account for your interest in social work? How do you see the experience you have had in paid or volunteer work as relating to your choice of social work as a profession?

My interest in social work started early in my high school career. During high school it was required that I take several classes that were considered as Sociology. My first class that I took in high school was called “Social Work”. In this class I was able to learn the basic vocabulary in social work such as the different social economic, that people were categorized as in society. An example would be: low, middle and upper class, also the understanding of different cultures, the diverse populations and the mentally ill. My interests began to grow from that one class and continued to grow in the future classes. I was very interested in why society had to categorize people based upon the money that a person made or did not make. I was very intrigued in how my fellow classmates labeled each other. This class really made me realize other people’s perspective of my own family and see and somewhat understand how they were considered as the “low class.” It was also very interesting to me that during that class, my teacher had the class complete an exercise regarding what it took to get married and stay married; also what it would cost for a new couple starting out in life. The class was broke down into groups, the group had to exist of at least one female and one male. As a group we had to complete a budget, follow that budget based upon the amount of income that we drew from a box, it also depended how resourceful your team could be. The project also consisted of paying rent, utilities, insurance, obtain furniture and anything else that a couple may have to have to start out with. The project ended up and the grade was based upon how well you were able to finance and follow your budget.
