Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are just a few of the many social media sites that are available in today’s world. These sites can be used for something good, bad, and even inspirational. These platforms can be used to promote such things as events, products, and even self-promotion. It can also be used to promote violence, bullying, and even suicide. When these sites are used, they’re used to connect with friends, family, and people from around the world. It’s used to show the adventures, and the people you meet. In Sociology, there are three perspectives that can be used to view Social Media Sites in different ways. These perspectives are functionalism, conflict and interactionist.
A functionalist "believes that society is held together by social consensus, in which members of the society agree upon and work together to achieve what is best for the society as a whole (Daniella Knight, 2010)." Functionalist is often viewed in a negative way because they neglect the negative. They also share the same values. If there is something that doesn't meet the standards of the functionalist, then it will not be passed on to the next generation. They believe that social media helps the community by letting everyone now what is going on as far as a health risk, recalls, and wars. These sites also advertise different kinds of items such as food, electronic devices, and cars. It also enforces new social trends. Over the past couple of months, I’ve noticed such trends as The Kylie Jenner lip challenge and the Charlie challenge.
In the conflict perspective, individuals struggle and compete with each other in numerous resources. As a result of this, power, and wealth are spread amongst those who succeed.
