Physician Assisted Suicide Kory Donovan February 3, 2009 JURI 3706 ATTN: Nancy Komsa The intention of physician assisted suicide is to assist in the suicide of a terminally ill person andto make dying as painless and dignified as possible. There is a visible difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide. Euthanasia is the act of a physician removing treatment or unplugging a life line with or without the consent of the patient. Assisted suicide is aiding a person in suicide. Most often it is the need of death by the patient who is suffering from terminal illness in which the physician provides a prescription for a lethal dose of medication for that individual. I am a strong believer that independent people who are able to make rational and informed decisions, about their livelihood and quality of life,should be able to make the decision of whether or not they choose to live another day. Section 241 of the Criminal Code of Canada infringes the valuable rights stated in Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. (CUTTER pp2) Today is the first day of the rest of everyone’s lives, if tomorrow brings more pain than yesterday, and a human being is suffering on their death bed; I am of the belief that they should endure the opportunity to willingly travel to the afterlife without society reflecting ancient court procedures in order to justify values and morals. There are however many exceptions which need to be examined. The laws of our country are made to protect society and hold people accountable for their actions. The first thing that people ask when faced with a new law is “what are the exceptions?” Section 241 of the Criminal Code of Canada outlines the facts of counseling suicide and aiding and abetting a person to commit suicide. The exceptions of that law should include people who are legally able to consent to their own death. Part of life is death. Eventually everyone will die, it is inevitable.
