 Things They Carried

Throughout my high school career, I have read many books for English classes as well as independently. I have had enjoyed many of them such as Huck Finn, Flags of Our Fathers, Of Mice and Men, and Frankenstein. Although I enjoyed reading each one of these books, my favorite had to be “The Things They Carried”. During my sophomore year, my English class went to go check out “The Things They Carried” and that’s how I discovered one of my favorite books I have ever read. I thought this book was going to be like all the rest of the books I had read in the past, nothing really special. I thought that it would be one of those books I just read to get it over with, but I was completely wrong! I was actually a little excited when I saw the front cover because it reminded of “The Flags of our Fathers,” one of my favorite books as well. I was expecting a great book just by looking at the cover, although we can never judge a book by its cover. I went to the first page of the book as soon as I got it checked out and became quickly attached. A soon as we got back to class I was already skimming through it. Also I believe I became really interested in this book because we did the most assignments regarding this book, which helped me further realize the meaning of the text. “The Things They Carried” is about a Vietnam War veteran who shared some of his stories from the Vietnam War and the author informs the readers about the mental and physical state of the war veteran. I really enjoyed reading this book because it truly describes the dreadful consequences of war. It also writes about real events and commands that happened during the war. This book makes me realize that I am very fortunate and blessed to be living in a country as great as the United States of America because I am able to focus on my goals rather than having to worry about my life each and every day. “The Things They Carried” is by far the most inspirational book I have read and I...
