From what has been transpiring in the media lately, there are strong indications that majority of people lose their lives in USA every year due to police brutality. Although the exact number of these people may not be known because police officers do not give the exact number, there are strong indications that majority of them are African Americans. Whereas majority of these people are usually men purported to be armed, African American women also lose their lives due to police brutality (Amnesty international, 2015). This is a worrying trend because police officers are mandated with protecting lives and upholding the law.
Majority of the police officers linked to brutal killing are not held accountable because the legal mechanism is wanting. Some people might argue otherwise, but the truth of the matter is that existing laws do not address the issue in the right way. Therefore, unless state laws change, it will not be possible to bring police brutality under control. This paper focuses its attention on police brutality in the US with an aim of establishing ways of stopping it. The paper argues that the US states law should be revised and police officers held to account for atrocious killing if police brutality is to be stopped in the country. Otherwise, the problem will continue until something of this nature is done.
To begin with, there are strong indications that majority of the people that lose lives due to police brutality are African American. It has always been alleged that these people are usually armed and they attack police officers that try to arrest them when caught committing felonies. This allegation has been used as the basis to explain why this problem is common among the minority groups especially African Americans.
