Health and safety legislation- OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2006 hereinafter called OSHA, is a primary legislation governing health, safety and welfare at work. With regards to OSHA and the field of engineering, the both may be connected where in the workplace a potential OSHA violation needs to be validated or disputed. Many work related accidents occur during the construction or manufacturing process or during the use of a machine. Engineering being such a “hands on” field, the likelihood of injuries is high. As such it is mandatory that companies provide proper safety gear such as gloves, hats, eyewear etc. when one is “on the job.”

The Companies Act

The Companies Act provides a legal framework for the operation of companies. The Companies Act has had a significant impact in Trinidad and Tobago as it is one of the most industrialized nations in the Caribbean and has resources particularly natural gas. Hence oil companies such as Petrotrin and British Petroleum are located in Trinidad where are a variety of the engineering fields is employed. The Engineering Companies in the private sector would be required to adhere to the provisions under the Company Act also. As a result, it has impacted the manner in which business is conducted in the country. The Company Act has implications for not just the domestic community but a body of international investors who have interest in the Caribbean region.
