Prejudice and Discrimination Article
As of the year 2000, Indonesia was considered the largest nation containing the biggest Muslim population. This countries population is 88% Muslim which is a vast proportion. With this many of the same cultural group you would envision that the country would be nearly faultless when it came to the many groups and ethnicities. This sadly is not the case in this country.
All countries face many challenges when it comes to discrimination because of race, culture, religion, and so many other reasons. Discrimination is also expected when visiting in other countries, but just like our own country all other countries also face discrimination. One ethnic group that faces these issues is the Chinese in Indonesia. There are many issues that these people face within their own country involving race, religion, gender, and their culture in general. Discrimination is very common within this country and a huge target for discrimination is to woman and also the lower class.
There are a couple different types of Chinese in the country that are to be found in two different classifications, the Indonesian – Chinese and Original Chinese. Most of the migrants that come to the have a different look to their appearance, attitude, and beliefs to those who are citizens of the country, many have also dropped their native languages from where they have come from and speak the language of Indonesia. Even thou the many migrants do what they can to fit it the Original Chinese still consider the Indonesian Chinese to be of lower class than themselves because they are discriminated and said to have mixed blood. This group is labeled a minority in the country and is discriminated by those who are naturals to this country. Although, in a perfect world in any country all people no matter what color, race, or religion they are should be accepted but unfortunately in this country they are not accepted as citizens by the locals.
