Prison

“The United States has among the highest incarceration rates in the world. More people are behind bars in the United States than any other country. As of 2006, a record seven million people were behind bars, on probation or parole. Of that total, two point two million were incarcerated. The people's republic of China ranks second with one point five million. The United States has five percent of the world population and twenty-five percent of the world incarcerated population”(De Maille,2007). Imagine how over populated the United States prisons are today. Considering that there are several types of prisons:(1) Federal, which is operated and maintained by the federal government and for those offenders who commit a crime against a federal statue.(2) State, which is obviously operated and maintained by the state in which it is and for those offenders who have committed a crime that breaks a state or local law of that state.(3) Municipal which is simple a high security prison and (4) Military which are operated and maintained by the military, these prisons are usually for military personnel who have committed a serious crime as well as prisoners of war or POW. Within the prison system there four other types of prisons which are(1)Supermax, which house the most serious offenders, as in serial killers, serial rapist and anyone consider to be a great danger to anyone else.(2)Maximum, as well are for those who have committed a more serious crime but here they have slightly more privileges as in more time outside their cells and or telephone time.(3)Medium, These prisons are where the offenders are housed in dormitories and share every aspect of their daily lives with the other offenders. These are less restrictive then the supermax and maximum.(4)Minimum, These prisons are for those “non-violent white collar criminals”(De Maille,2007).
