At the beginning of 2004 Pimlico State High school was give funding that would allow for the establishment of a multipurpose fitness centre. The aim of this centre was to allow the staff, students and teachers of Pimlico High to exercise in a location that was both convenient, as well as low cost. This gym has been used for many purposes throughout the duration, including the use by Health and Physical Education (HPE) classes as a secondary exercise alternative, as well as providing staff, teachers and students with fitness opportunities.
However, there has been interest broached in using the facility for purposes that spread-out to the wider school community. There are two major suggested uses for the complex. The first is using the facility as preventative for “at-risk” students of contracting diseases associated with being overweight such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease osteoarthritis. The second use proposed is the implementation as an alternative for students that have behavioral problems.
Obesity has become a global epidemic over the past 30 years. This worldwide poses the single greatest threat to human health at the commencement of the 21st century. This rise in obesity has been attributed to many environmental and social factors which include, but not limited to: a more sedimentary lifestyle, smoking and easier access to higher calorie foods. This gym would provide an opportunity to educate “at-risk” students about the dangers of overeating and the importance of exercise, as well as providing a convenient location to engage in physical exercise and exertion.
Behavioral problems can sometimes manifest themselves in children as the result of a sedimentary lifestyle. This lack of physical exertion leads to misbehavior and the inability to concentrate in class. This gym could be used as an alternative to punishing children for misbehavior, giving a more positive and beneficial consequence, to children that need it, who otherwise would not...
