Productive and Counter Productive Behaviors
Productive and counterproductive behaviors in organizations can determine if the organization is going to be successful or if they will fall to the wayside and become obsolete in the struggle to keep doors open in this rapidly changing world and economy. There are factors both internal and external that affect our behaviors at work. Understanding those factors increases the chances of our organizations survival. During the training period (which is an internal factor) behaviors will be influenced by the employee’s overall health and family life (which are external factors). From a psychological perspective, we will define productive and counterproductive behavior, examine the affect that these behaviors have on the job performance and the performance of the organization and we will recommend strategies to increase productive behavior and decrease negative behaviors in organizations.
Productive Behavior
As employees acclimate to their work environment, they reach a point where they can positively contribute to the organization as a whole. From this understanding, we can conclude that productive behavior is best defined as employee behavior that affirms and supports the mission and objectives of the organization (Britt & Jex 2008). When an employee first starts at an organization, they are considered a liability from the organization’s view, because they are not contributing anything to the organization, they are being paid while in this early transition stage as well. The organization believes that over time, the employee will become productive and the organization will receive a return on the investment that they have made.
