Abstract
The world of social media is one that provides researchers a unique opportunity to examine how technology can influence the development of personality throughout a society. Researchers have discovered that technology may impact society in a way that perhaps wasn’t intended by the developers of the various social media platforms. The following paper is a culmination of the evidence from studies that examined the role social media has in the development of personality, which were gathered from peer-reviewed journals and government websites. Several themes emerged, but since the topic is relatively new within the field of study, with additional research, the role and impact of social media may be better understood in regards to personality and society as a whole.

Within the field of mental health counseling, there are a myriad of topics that could benefit from an expanded analysis. The role of technology in the lives of humans is a relatively new focus, and as such it is a topic that could benefit from further analysis to assess how various technological advances, specifically those among the social media platform variety, impact the lives of the users. For the purpose of the current paper, the role of social media will be examined, including the rationale for selecting the topic and how the literature on the topic will be located that will assist in assessing the influence technology and social media. Recommendations for future practice are included to help in guiding research in this relatively new field of study.
