‘If Bismarck had a constant objective it was to preserve and consolidate the empire he had created.’ How did he do this, and with what consequences?

The unification of Germany is today regarded as a defining moment in European history. It seemed to have a profound effect on the European balance of power, and transformed Germany into one of Europe’s leading super powers. One man generally held responsible for this unification is the Prussian born Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck was a conservative and was a strong believer of all anti-liberal measures. The 1848 revolutions which began in France sparked the beginning of a wave of revolutions across Europe and gave a relatively politically inexperienced man like Bismarck the chance to prove his worth to the Prussian hierarchy as he looked to combat liberals and revolutionaries. Bismarck soon rose through the ranks and established himself as a leading political figure in the history of Germany. He began to create an empire which he constructed to his benefit, leaving him with absolute power. Bismarck is considered a controversial figure in that many historians have different opinions of him, some portraying him as a genius, others as a villain. However it cannot be denied by either viewpoint that Bismarck was a key player in creating the Germany that stands in the present day. First, it is important to look at how Bismarck created this empire.
Bismarck spent his earlier political career serving in the Prussian House of Lords and also the Diet of the German Confederation in Frankfurt. During these years, Bismarck began to develop his own ideas and came to the conclusion that to over-power Austria, Prussia would have to begin to build up relationships and join up with other German states.
