The career I chose for my project is psychiatry. Psychiatry the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness.
Psychiatrists are MDs and PhD’s .who receives additional training and serves a supervised residency in their specialty. They may also have additional training in a psychiatric subspecialty, such as child psychiatry or neuropsychiatry. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication, which psychologists cannot do.
The starting salary of a Psychiatrist is generally about $51k a year. After working as a Psychiatrist for 1 year salary goes up $53k a year and increases $4k to $10k every 7 years.
Psychiatrists also assess and provide treatment for people with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They also study how the brain and nervous systems function and how these interact with people's environments and affect the way people think, feel and behave.
There are many different colleges that offer a doctorate in Psychiatry, but 3 of them I like are University of Houston, Brown University, and Argosy University. U of H is located in Houston, TX. BU is located in Rhode Island and Argosy is located in Chicago.
Admission to U of H requires top 11-20% and a minimum of 1000 on SAT or composite 21 on ACT. Tuition and fees are $8,500. The required amount of hours/years to get doctorate in Psychiatry is 192 hours or 8 years.
Psychological statistics and algebra are both used and required in college for Psychiatry. Mathematics and psychology are linked in two major ways. First, psychologists study mathematical cognition, i.e., the brain's development, acquisition, and application of mathematical skills. Second, psychologists use mathematics, particularly statistics, as a professional tool to quantify and analyze their scientific findings.
