The term I will be discussing is Empathy-Altruism Hypothesis-stated on Social Psychology Text page, 331 as “the idea that, when we feel empathy for a person, we will attempt to help him or her purely for altruistic reasons, regardless of what we have to gain.” I personally have felt empathy for someone whether rewards outweigh costs or costs outweighs rewards. When I was vacationing in Hong Kong this one summer, I was spending so much time with my boyfriend and his mother. My boyfriend’s mother is a lady that loves to volunteer and is a sympathetic person. At that moment, because of my relationship with my boyfriend I wanted to give his mother a good impression of myself, hoping she felt that I was also a sympathetic person. Hong Kong is a place where you can find so many different homeless people around, and every street is loaded with people pretending to be deaf and muted just trying to sell you stuffed animals. Eventually people will be so annoyed by them that they will no longer help the people with disabilities, since most of them are fraud and yet at the same time we no longer feel pity or empathy for those who have disabilities. So then, that day my boyfriends mother and I was shopping and we happen to run into yet another one of those disabled people that were trying to sell us some stuff, just as I was about to walk pass them, my boyfriend’s mother gave a hundred dollar bill to them just to buy all the stuff she was carrying off her little tray, that way she can go home early and rest. At that moment I was furious I wanted to tell her that they were a fraud and we shouldn’t be giving them money for what they’re doing. But I saw the smile on her face and I knew that she was pleased with what she was doing. Although I felt no empathy for this person selling us these things that I don’t think I would ever use or need, I knew that if I were to give a good impression of myself to my boyfriend’s mother I knew what I had to do.
