Reflections: After watching a short clip of speech “Dedication” by Adrian, I learnt how affective it is to use a narrative of personal story telling in order to capture the audience’s attention and to keep them listening. In this speech, Adrian uses his personal story to tell the audience of how dedicated his grandfather is. He uses his notes to keep him on track and help him maintains the eye contact with the audience. When we talk about things that are personal and emotional, and it gets the better of us, we can stop, take a deep breath and continue the speech. The audience will definitely understand the feeling that we have. At the end of the speech, which is conclusion, it would be great if we put some messages so that the audience can remember our speech.

Chapter 5: This chapter talks about how to choose the best topic. The keys is to find a significant subject which can be discussed and increase the audience’s knowledge, bring a desirable change, or highlight important cultural values and beliefs. Easy way to pick a topic is from other courses you are taking that you find interesting to be discussed. Another way is from current events that you can find from newspaper, magazines or you can even consider international and cultural topics. Everyone in your class is not always from the same culture so it will be wonderful if you talk about other culture that gain the audience’s knowledge. Once you have a broad topic, you must then narrow it enough to discuss it more specifically. You need to know the purpose of your speech and thesis statement in order to have a good speech.

Chapter 9: This chapter taught us how to organize the main points of our speech. By using a limited number of points, the audience will easily remember the points that you have.
