This essay is a critical analysis of the article entitled, “Putting out the fire” written by Vincent Ferguson. The article was written out of concern for our young males in The Bahamas and about their violent behavior. Not only is the problem presented but Ferguson also presents solutions that he believes will help solve the problem. This article was published in the Bahama Journal May of 2005. In the article, Ferguson illustrates that after a violent incident occurs among our young males, usually in the schools, there will probably be a brief outbreak of activities, such as making our schools safer and blaming the teachers or parents. He states that this is not assisting Bahamians to find solution for our youth. He continues to show the character of a typical boy who is adventurous and energetic. Ferguson explains that if the natural drive created by God is stifled, it can have a negative effect on the male for the first of his life. Ferguson then shows how boys struggle through the stage of adolescence and need assistance in finding their way out. He believes that instead of our young males finding comfort in their stage of frustration, they find neglect, shame and abandonment in the home, school and society. This is because in the home sometimes the father is absent and there is no male figure in the young mans life. At schools, it is believed that most teaching methods are feminized and more attention is given to the girls. In addition to all of this, young males are constantly receiving daily negativity from society. Ferguson concludes by showing that we need to rediscover the social structures and institutions that used to help our young males but now are destroying them. I agree with Ferguson, the part theses young men have decided to go down is rocky, so Ferguson has targeted adult audience, to show help them open their eyes and try to be better mentors, his information is structured probably, and this can also be found in his tone, and language.
