Standard Deviation Abstract
The following is a learning team assignment concerning standard deviation use in the business world. The text within includes the combined abstracts of each team member based on the peer reviewed article of their choice.
Hearing Protector Performance and Standard Deviation
The purpose of the study is to determine the proper level of hearing protectors for the workplace. According to Williams and Dillon (2005), researchers concluded their findings by asking several questions such as: “Does the performance of a hearing protector and its use protect the exposure level of the user? Can the octave band attenuations be determined of the device (plug/muff)? Can the octave band attenuations be subtracted from the octave band spectral values of the chosen representative spectrum? Can the overall dB SPL value of the attenuated spectrum be subtracted from the overall dB SPL value of the reference spectrum to give the overall dB attenuation provided by the device?” The hypothesis of the study is aimed at reducing the exposed level to an acceptable value. Users should expect the attenuation to fall within a reasonable range of values around a norm (Williams & Dillon, 2005). Williams and Dillon (2005) shared their major result from the study which half of users using hearing protection were well protected. Also, from the study it was suggested that an increasing standard deviation with decreasing attenuation means that a significant number of users are, in fact, experiencing over-protection and from the study it was suggested and recommended that hearing protectors should be designed so users experience similar levels of attenuation from the same device (Williams & Dillon, 2005).
