STRATEGY: DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENTS

BEHAVIOR PROMPTS

Child has established a top left starting point Model these behaviors - clear demonstrations with few words

Child displays consistent left to right movement across text Give praise and positive reinforcement for any attempts that are close to what is required

Child is able to match words in speech to words in text, Starting point
one after the other Point to the starting position on the page or line

Child is able to locate the first letter of lines Place a signal such as a green sticker to indicate the starting point to the left of the text

Child matches words in text with finger and voice “Did it match?”

Child matches words in text to teacher’s voice “Were there enough words?”

Accompany the child’s pointing with your own pointer


STRATEGY: LOCATING ONE OR TWO KNOWN WORDS

BEHAVIOR PROMPTS

Child is attending to particular words in continuous text Prompt the child to use a special cue he knows
which he knows
Tell the child the word; then follow with:
“Would that make sense?”
“Would ........... fit there?”
“Do you think it looks like .................?

Read back an error sentence to him and ask:
“You said ..... Was that right?”

Reread the page or sentence up to the word-read- wrongly with fluent phrasing and stop, or, if you need to give more help, articulate the first sound of...
