Rebuttal Argument about Death Penalty: Response to 5 reasons to oppose the death penalty from www.nodeathpenalty.org First off, let's exclude the United States from one of the 74 countries that continue that death penalty and focus on the other ones that do. The vast majority of executions that happen each year come from China, Iran, and Vietnam. If you think of these countries, what do they have in common? Could it be that their governments are not republics, but are much stricter and run differently? I really don't think the United States should be put in the same category as these countries as they have different regulations and our judicial branch runs differently. Actually, you could have said that the death penalty is a world issue instead of focusing and putting all the blame on the United States. Focusing back on the United States, death penalty support has declined to 64 percent instead of 80 percent since 1995. Isn't that amazing? It means we need to build a movement and abolish the death penalty now! Wrong. Sure the general public for supporting the death penalty as gone down, but doesn't that mean the majority of the public is still supporting the death penalty as a whole? The first reason your organization has come up with is that the death penalty is racist. Racism, really? When you think of racism, you think of back then with the Vietnam War and Martin Luther King. I'm not saying racism is not in our society anymore, but our society has evolved and developed more. Saying there is racism when it comes to deciding death penalties and such is very ignorant and immature. When the court decides on the victim's sentence, I'm pretty sure they do not see an African American and say, "This guy should be put to death because he is black." African Americans and other minorities are countable to the 50 percent of the death related crimes, meaning it makes sense to have more African Americans in the death sentence.
