The Worldview of Stephen W. Hawking
The Worldview of Stephen Hawking is a very interesting one. He has classified himself as neither a theist nor an atheist. Some background on Stephen Hawing if you are not familiar with him. He was raised in a highly educated household. His father researched tropical diseases, and eventually became the head of parasitology at the British Institute of Medical Research. Stephen Hawking was a very intelligence individual. In 1950 his father moved to Mill Hill when he became the head of the institute there. Also in that same here Stephen started his schooling at St. Albans High School for girls, then when Stephen was eleven he transferred to St. Albans School for boys. Nine years later Stephen earned a scholarship into Oxford. He completed his degree in Physics in 1962 with honors. That same year he then persued his Ph.D. in Cosmology at Cambridge. While in transition from an undergraduate to a graduate school, Hawking began to notice neurological problems. Some of those problems were stumbling and slurred speech. His parents being concerned and wanting the best for him took him for some testing. It was early 1963 that Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is an incurable muscle disease. It is where your muscle waste away, almost like they are rotting away. Stephen’s doctors predicted that he would not live long enough to complete his doctoral work. Hawking on the other hand had different plans. He wasn’t going to give up. His condition has gotten worse over the many years. He is almost now entirely paralyzed and has to communicate through a speech generating device. He has been married twice and has three children. Which brings me to the point of this essay and why I would chose Stephen W. Hawking as my role model.
Stephen grew up in a very intelligence home with loving parents who wanted to see him succeed and reach his potential. His...
