Reflection Paper
Coming into Teaching Reading in the Schools I thought the class was only going to be about teaching a reading class. I was never one to enjoy reading; I would only read when it was required for me to do so. I can say to this day the only book I really ever enjoyed reading and because it was a requirement was “The Great Gatsby”. Reading is an essential class in life in order for us to be come fluent.
This class was a requisite for my degree in special education. If I ever decide to become a teacher this class will come in handy. We learned many subjects on reading programs to foster early literacy, beginning reading, and content area reading development. I decided I want to work at a clinic for autism so what I can say helped me the most here was learning the phonological and phonemic awareness once again because this helps me when practicing with the children I will be working with. It helps me by remembering what to do when helping children who have a hard time saying words correctly by sounding them out correctly. What I also enjoyed doing were the lesson plans for a week of school. This was because I will have to do lesson plans for my block classes and this already gave me a huge strength in knowing what to do daily. Also it helps us understand the books we will have and being able to choose what we think is appropriate and sufficient for the children to do and learn in class. Since this is a summer class it is hard to be able to cover everything since it goes by in less then 4 weeks. Although our professor was able to teach us many subjects for example: Oral language, Phonological and Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, Literacy Development and Practice, Word Analysis and Decoding, Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, Assessment and Instruction of Developing Literacy.
