We can’t rely on religion anymore. It has failed us before. Religion attempts to make sense out of the world around us, finding order and meaning in what often seems chaotic and meaningless. Religion can’t explain the madness during the holocaust. Beyond 6 million Jewish individuals were murdered and at some point of their lives, I’m pretty sure they consulted their spiritualties to seek answers to their chaotic lives. Events of the past has challenged the long-held belief that God intervenes in the world to balance injustice by punishing evil and rewarding the good. It’s time for individuals to seek meaning by answering lives’ existential questions through another world view; one that is coherent with society today.
New Zealand has adopted the secularist tradition ever since the Europeans colonised the land. The effect of religion has weaken as it fails to update itself with the pace of world civilisation in society today. Religion is still available for those who seek answers spiritually but not in a way it used to be. My family has a religion but it isn’t forced upon myself nor am I obliged to attend its celebrations. With society today; the need for education seems to have taken its priorities over our spiritualties. Churches for example have now become a place to socialize; a place to develop new acquaintances. I’ve also seen various cultures who attend church with God’s utmost respect, yet act completely opposite at school or any social environment distant from religion. Seriously, be proud of your values and don’t spoil it or else there’s literally no point. Individuals however, disregardfully use religion for their personal financial goals and not just for entitlements. Currently, ‘Bishop’ Brian Tamaki heads Destiny Church with millions of dollars from his ‘manipulated’ believers. During the 1956’s 0.5% of our population declared that they had no religion.
