Christianity –VS- Islam
The two religions I choose to compare and contrast are Christianity and Islam. Being a Christian myself, I feel I know a fair amount in regards to this specific religion itself. I had always been told that Islam was comparable to Christianity in many ways, but before taking this class I was not truly aware of all the similarities. There are of course differences in the two religions. In this paper I will, to the best of my ability, discuss the similarities and differences between Christianity and Islam. I will begin this paper with an overview of the beginnings of Christianity and describe some of the sacred ideas. I will then follow up with the religion of Islam, with information of its beginning and sacred ideas. Through the knowledge gained in this course I feel I am now able to confidently compare and contrast these two religions.
Christianity emerged from the strict religion of Judaism and is approximately 2000 years old. Christianity also sees itself as the fulfillment of Judaism (Broadbent). Abraham is considered the father of Christianity, because he made a convent with God. Christianity is monotheistic is practice, because Christians only believe in one God. Christianity is one of the most followed religions with about 2.04 million Christians throughout the world, but is largely practiced in the western world. Christianity also seeks total conversion, meaning they believe the entire world should become Christians. There are numerous different denominations within the Christian religion such as Baptist, Southern Baptist, Methodist, Protestant, and Catholics. Because there are so many denominations and the doctrine can be complex, total unity is impossible.
