President Barrack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in February 2009. The purpose and goals of ARRA was to stimulate (also known as ‘the health care stimulus package’) the economy to ensure both short and long term goals for health care in the United States by providing funding to various resources. [Writer’s (My) Note for draft: provide examples of resources and dollar amounts.] Within this health care stimulus package, supported by ARRA, particular funding was allocated toward Health Information Technology (HIT). The government was also charged to develop national standards to promote the exchange of electronic health data, where the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) would provide incentive dollars to eligible providers and eligible hospitals if they proved the use of these electronic records in a meaningful way. Funding was also provided to support comparative effectiveness research to support better patient safety/care, with the use of this patient-centric data. As a patient, the ability to make better decisions and have a view into one’s own health care is valuable, as it allows a patient to take responsibility and an active role into their own health care. With health care professionals using incentive dollars and implementing new or upgrading systems, this promotes data interoperability and also provides the tools and resources to support better decision-making on a patient’s health.
