The main purpose of this research is to found out how teachers promote positive behaviours of young people in a school setting and also some of the concerns teachers may have regarding challenging behaviour. The reason of doing this project is that it gives an understanding of promoting positive behaviour in schools as well as shows the importance of working relationship between the school and parents in helping to promote positive behaviour amongst young people. Challenging behaviour can be understood as ways of communication, this has been highlighted by (Emerson and Bromley, 1995; Pitonyak, 2001; Ager and O’ May 2001; Kevan, 2003).

What motivated me for undertaking this research derives from my role as a teaching assistant and as a parent. It is very important that staff, other professions and parents know how to help support young people with challenging behaviour. The potential participants of this research are teachers, Teaching assistants or anyone who might be interested. The research project has been motivated by the module ED2019 understanding and supporting behaviour and ED 3019 explaining behaviour. Male (1996) argue that challenging behaviour in an educational setting can result restricted admission to the curriculum or exclusion of the pupils from school. Pupils showing challenging behaviour in the school setting are the main cause of intense pressure in the lives of teachers. The main focus of this project is to found out how teachers promote positive behaviour of young people in school settings based on the questions below.

Research questions:
1. What are teachers’ perceptions on young people with challenging behaviours?

2. How do teaching assistants view their role of supporting young people with challenging behaviours in a classroom?

3. How do teachers respond to challenging behaviour by young people?
