Canada is a country built upon the many qualities of its people in combination with the natural landscape of geography. Many of the great stories which can be told about the country’s history, heritage, and culture are set behind the backdrop of giant settings such as the Canadian Shield, the Atlantic Coast, the Rocky Mountains, the Arctic, but not all of Canada’s history is good. Residential school’s are one of the darker part of Canadian history and they have left behind a lot of suspicion as to why they were created, what people thought of them when they were created, and what sort of legacy they left behind!
Residential School’s are one of the darkest secrets of Canadian history, but what was the real reason they came into existence? Residential schools were government-sponsored religious schools established to assimilate Aboriginal children into Euro-Canadian culture. ( Miller, 2012, Pg. 1) The schools were brought into play to assimilate the Indian kids into the society and get rid of “ The Indian In The Child. “ It was clearly stated by Duncan Campbell Scott, who was the Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs in Canada in 1920, "I want to get rid of the Indian problem. I do not think as a matter of fact, that the country ought to continuously protect a class of people who are able to stand alone... Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department." (Charter, 1999, Pg. 1) The idea of the Residential Schools was brought up by a man named Nicholas Flood Davin, who was sent out to do some research to on how to make the “Indians” more civilized. All in all the Residential School were created to assimilated the “Indians” into the Euro-Canadian society.
