Romeo and Juliet
What’s in a Name?

“Love give me strength, and strength will help me through.” William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a tragic drama written in the 1590s about two star-crossed lovers. The play was set in Verona, Italy and there are countless examples of Love, such as the passionate love of Romeo and Juliet, the motherly love shown by the Nurse toward Juliet and Lord and Lady Capulet’s conditional love for Juliet. The influence of love throughout the play also had the ability to change the way the characters acted.
Romeo and Juliet were young people led by their hearts. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet were victims of Cupid's arrows. Romeo was madly in love with Juliet as shown when he proclaimed, “See how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might get to touch that cheek!” This illustrates that Romeo was so in love with Juliet that he wished to be closer to her. Another example was when Juliet says, “Come civil night, Thou sober-suited matron all in black.” This shows that Juliet couldn’t wait for the night to come so she could see her beloved Romeo. Romeo and Juliet shared such a special love during the play; they were like two pieces of a puzzle that just fitted together perfectly. However in the end their love for each other ended up killing them both. Nevertheless throughout the play they portrayed a passionate romantic love for each other.
Juliet and the Nurse share a very close bond, one that surpasses one of a girl and her servant. This strong bond is more like the bond of a mother and daughter. The nurse said, “I would say thou hadst suck'd wisdom from thy teat.” This shows that the nurse was essentially Juliet’s mother. She had fed Juliet and raised her since she was a baby. Juliet sees the nurse as a trustworthy adult and confides in her, about her love for Romeo. Overall the Nurse is literally the mother figure for Juliet and the one person Juliet trusts.
