Safer with Cell Phones?

I just happen to stumble across this article by chance. It talks about how college students feel safer having cell phones. The research reveals that carrying a cell phone can amp up risk-taking, particularly among women. (LiveScienc.com 2008) I found this statement very interesting simply because I’m a women and I always carry a cell phone. I feel safer having my cell phone, however I don’t think it makes me safer. The research also found people were more careless while using a cell phone. They tend not to pay attention to what’s going on around them.
Unfortunately, the article doesn’t include the other side of the story. What good has come out of having a cell phone. There may be incidents where someone being on a cell phone causes an accident or they end up getting into trouble because they are not paying attention to their surroundings. However, there are also many good things that come from having a cell phone. When there is an emergency a cell phone comes in handy. You get into an accident you have a phone readily available. There have been reports of people getting lost or stranded and using the phone to call for help.
Obviously, there are many pros and cons to having a cell phone. Personally, I think having a cell phone is a great idea. Overall it can get you out of more situations then it can get you in. There needs to be more thorough research done on this subject in order to say which is the best option. Socially people love having a cell so they can stay connected and they feel safer knowing they have that connection in case of an emergency.
